A Dragon Priest Restored

“With this new dungeon, we really wanted to tell the story of Scalecaller visually and at the same time emphasize how her corruption has spread to all of her followers,” says Mike Finnigan, the Dungeon Lead. “And setting it in some Orsinium-styled ruins really worked for what we wanted to do with the Dragon Priest, her cult, and their story.”

The fetid halls of Scalecaller Peak

As you explore the mountain and its dark pathways, you’ll notice a toxic glow – the result of the Peryite cultists’ foul experiments – that illuminates the caverns and creatures within.?Making your way up the windswept mountainside, you’ll do battle with ogres and giants that have been infected by the cult’s mysterious affliction and become all the stronger for it. But even more dangerous are the Peyrite cultists themselves, devoted to their Daedric master and led by the Dragon Priest.

Uncover the dark history of the resurrected Dragon Priest and put a stop to the foul plans that she and Peryite have for all of Tamriel.

Plague-ridden Foes

You and your group must battle through the frenzied beasts and fanatical Peryite cultists guarding Scalecaller Peak. But all of the dungeon’s inhabitants have been twisted, yet empowered by the cult’s foul pestilence, making them a dangerous challenge for even the most experienced groups. Be warned: while navigating the mountain’s darkest pathways, watch where you step. Even the skeevers have a toxic surprise for unsuspecting delvers!

The bosses guarding the temple are every bit as twisted as their minions, and will utilize a host of tricky mechanics that you must identify to survive. For example, the twin ogres Orzun the Foul-Smelling and Rinaerus the Rancid are challenging foes individually, but take them on at the same time and you’re in for a nasty surprise!

“The two ogres Orzun and Rinaerus have abilities that cancel each other out, so it’s beneficial to kill them both simultaneously,” Finnigan suggests. “However, if you bring them too close together, they’ll buff themselves and do a lot more damage to you and your party.”

Beware of foul monsters

Scalecaller Peak will subvert your expectations with tricky, unexpected mechanics, but if you’re clever, you can find opportunity in unlikely places.

“When running Scalecaller Peak, we throw a lot of stuff at players from the periphery,” says Finnigan. “First and foremost, players should keep an eye on their surroundings. It also helps to play with your subtitles or sound on, as some of the dungeon’s major mechanics are telegraphed via speech.”

Many of these tips come from the dungeon’s main NPC, Jorvuld Davaux, an academic investigating the temple. Pay attention to him as you fight. You ignore his words at your peril!

Once you reach the temple’s summit, you’ll have your mettle tested by Zaan the Scalecaller herself. Be warned: the Daedric Prince has lent her a powerful Daedric Artifact known as Spellbreaker.

“Peryite hasn’t really been featured in The Elder Scrolls Online before so we thought this was a great opportunity to show the effects of his work in all its glory,” says Finnigan. “Adding Spellbreaker made sense, given its association with Peryite. It also shows how much the Daedric Prince favors the Dragon Priest.”

Alone, Zaan the Scalecaller is a terrible threat, but when assisted by Peryite and Spellbreaker, she’ll require a high degree of teamwork and awareness to overcome.

Plunder the Peak

Should you survive the final battle and stand victorious atop Scalecaller Peak, you’ll earn a host of unique rewards.?

These riches could include the Blackmarrow Necromancer skin, earned by completing the Scalecaller Peak Challenger achievement; unique Trophies and Busts for completing the dungeon on both Normal and Veteran mode; and the Renegade Dragon Priest Mask, earned simply by entering one of the two Dragon Bones dungeons.

As with previous dungeons, Scalecaller Peak’s bosses (and some chests) will drop three unique item sets in light, medium, and heavy sizes. In our first of many posts previewing Neverwinter’s Module 13: Lost City of Omu, we are looking at the new adventure zone, the mobs you can find, as well as the Scrying Stone and teleport locations. The first thing to notice is that the map is relatively small, at least compared to the most recent modules 10, 11 and 12. That’s not a downside though. After River District and company it feels nice that everything is close by and players without VIP will certainly love it. Visually it’s well done as always, I especially like the massive Omuan Royal Palace (see the pictures below). Maps generally work best when they don’t get in the way of players and look decent.That’s certainly the case here as there’s much attention to detail without making the small map look super crowded.

From many entrances in the?Lost City of Omu adventure zone you are able to enter a map under the map, the so-called Undercity. It’s nearly as big and a true basement. It’s not instanced and each exit overlaps with an entrance on the surface, essentially making Omu a map with two floors. Unfortunately exploring Undercity doesn’t come as naturally. There are few unique reference points and you will bring up the mini map a lot more frequently than on the surface. It’s probably appropriate for a cave setting, but still felt slightly annoying.

All Mobs Are Reused or Reskins

For the mobs on the map the devs used either old ones or reskins from earlier content. We have the Yuan-Ti, Bears and Lions from Soshenstar River as well as freshly colored Raptors and Rexs. Undead, Thayan, Kobolds and Greenscale Lizards come from earlier adventure zones and the Gorillas could be recolored Barlguras?from Underdark. But I guess we’re used to recycled stuff by now and since the mobs fit the theme, it’s not disturbing.

Scrying Orbs and Teleport Feature

As always the map has the usual three Scrying Orbs to highlight certain spots. Youtuber “Rainer” was kind enough to make some maps for us lazy people out there that show all the locations. Also marked are the new “teleport” spots that connect different areas with each other. Players need to do a skill check to interact with the secret passages and teleport devices.

Players on the contrary largely describe Hunts as brutal grind that they mostly do alone. Or, as?micky1p00 put it: The only thing those Hunts make you socialize with is the VIP mailbox. Quite a few endgame players are actually not willing to get into Hunts at all. Running around Chult and endlessly killing mobs until a rare one spawns that may or may not drop what you need simply isn’t fun long-term. So there seems to be a certain discrepancy between what the developers intended and players are experiencing.

What’s the deal here? Have Hunts failed as social feature, or are some players too fierce with their assessment? Let’s weigh in!

Lures and Trophys Are Special Items

Let’s look at some facts first. Lures and Trophys are pretty special items for many reasons. They are unique so that you can’t have two of them at the same time and, although unbound, you can’t post them on the Auction House either. You can however trade or mail them to yourself or other players. This functionality is unique, and according to Asterdahl?deliberately designed this way to enforce social interaction while hunting.

The system indeed works great if you’re doing it within a party. A group can split up in Chult and farm for Trophys until they get enough to exchange for a Lure. Then somebody with the hunting path unlocked in the campaign acquires the Lure, the group takes down the spawn, and rolls for the loot. Some of the Star Hunts?might be too difficult?for casual players to tackle alone anyway.?Even if you’re farming solo the limitations obviously force you to be more interactive.?You have to deal Lures and Trophys directly using the trade channel, players gather to farm T-Rex locations together, and non-VIPs have to rely on someone to summon a signpost.

Doing Hunts in a Party Has Little Actual Benefits

The issue however is that doing Hunts in a party has little actual benefits. You’re pretty much as fast, if not faster, doing your most efficient routes alone. A party theoretically could communicate rare spawns, and wait until everyone is there to take them down. That way, all members have a chance at a Trophy, but depending on how scattered your group is it takes a bunch of time to gather and greatly works against overall efficiency. Most likely a random player will come by anyway and start killing the mob. So what you’ll probably do in a party is cover different areas on the map, and effectively farm alone.

For T-Rex farms a party makes more sense, because everyone touching the T-Rex is guaranteed to get its Tyrannosaurus Rex Fang. Also it’s way harder to take down so that groups can cover all three spawn locations and call everyone in once it appears. Strangers are very unlikely to steal the kill. The social aspect absolutely works in terms of the T-Rex, but Fangs aren’t the bottleneck of the system. It’s much harder to get the other Trophys, which as said are best farmed alone. That’s why Hunting has largely developed as solo feature and loot entirely belongs to the one that places the Lure item.

So Did It Work Out?

It’s too easy to say it hasn’t worked though. I can totally see casual players or members of guilds and alliances grouping up for Hunts. You don’t have to have the corresponding campaign tasks unlocked yourself, or be a VIP, and it’s more fun than doing them alone. Depending on your item level and personal progression this might even enable you to get a great piece of gear every once in a while. Not everyone can run TONG, much less comfortably or fast. So Hunts, or the loathed Voninblod gear of Module 10, are your chances to get to item level 480.

Where the system completely fails is endgame. Those players do Hunts alone because it’s the most efficient way to tackle them. A possible?argument of the system being an “alternative source” of gear fails. It has decent enough incentives for the hardcores?to farm for certain rings for example. Plus the?Rex Corona?and?Rex Amiculum?are “bis” for more than one build. It’s a pain in the butt to get the T3 lure, and why you see a lot of complaints.

It often makes much more sense to buy it than running the required content yourself.

Stronghold

Just like the Stronghold Company pieces, Artifact Gear from Masterwork Professions?extends your range of attribute and stat choices. The Masterwork II recipes feature four different unique waist and neck pieces, but are often overpriced. Getting the necessary recipes is a huge undertaking and reserved for the endgame elite. Even if you’re in a well organized alliance that has access to Masterworks, you still need to supply you crafter with expensive resources to forge your piece of choice.

Profession are a popular way of utilizing alternative characters. Since all toons have a hard cap of nine slots, the productivity of your account directly scales with the numbers of characters you use. Additionally alts are set up quite fast because most professions are easy to level. That’s why bringing up professions is a standard procedure even if you don’t actively play a toon.

Leadership Is King

The best profession to level is Leadership. Unfortunately that one is a severe pain and it takes months to get to level 25. Ideally you want all nine slots unlocked before you start it, making even the preparation a grind of its own. The rewards however are worth it. It might be faster to start Leadership right away, but that way I have two additional professions that I can instantly use in case?they get relevant.

If you want to avoid Leadership altogether then you can produce “crates” for your guild coffers. Each profession has recipes either for “Surplus” or “Gems”. The Guild Marks you gain generate a little less AD (using Explorer’s Charts) than Leadership, but you also don’t need to wait for months until you can actually start farming the profession.

“It might have been a six figure budget to pull this off with film,” he said during an interview last week in the Mission District, where he works at a small production company called Group 301. “And still, maybe, no one would ever get to see it.”

Instead, Rinehart made his half hour digital movie for $5,000, and an audience of 20 million will have the opportunity to watch a shorter version of it on the new channel.

As Current launches, the plan is to depend heavily on viewer submissions, although initially about 75 percent of the content will be made in house. The channel, which will be carried locally on Direct TV channel 366 and Comcast Digital Plus channel 125, is hard to describe in part because there’s nothing on TV to compare it to.

If HBO, Showtime and the big three networks offer formal dining with a reservation, then Current is a drop by any time tapas bar. The shows, called pods, will be no longer than five minutes, with on air hosts introducing them. While the pods will be categorized (labeled , Current Video, etc. ), the channel will have a random feel, with each video’s frequency of play partially controlled by viewers who vote on the Internet.

Based on the videos that have been posted on Current’s Web site over the past month, executives appear to be aiming for two parts studiousness and one part levity, with pods covering just about every subject. Think National Public Radio, if Napoleon Dynamite were the vice president in charge of programming.

Rinehart is among the more serious and polished contributors, while many other films look as if they were made for little more than the cost of batteries and electricity. The lowest budget filmmakers are often quirky, such as and , who made a hilarious pizza delivery mockumentary called “Knight of the Highway” and a love letter to video game addiction called “Online: The World of Warcraft.”

“The power that you can get in that $500 piece of software is the equivalent quite literally of what 10 years ago cost a million dollars,” Rosenblum said. “And it required a highly trained operator to do. Now any 12 year old can do it.”

“This is a generation that has grown up with home video cameras, so they have a different level of intuitive understanding of the process of making media,” Neuman added. “In the same way that we were all comfortable with our Instamatics, they’re just as comfortable with a video camera.”

But Rosenblum said broadcast executives are just starting to appreciate new technologies, and the role that the Internet will play in the future. broadcasters taking advantage of new technologies were on the fringes, including public access stations and other nonprofits. “Television networks are finally starting to wake up to the Internet, which for a long time they thought was a place to put leftovers,” Rosenblum says. “The Internet is a much more alive (and) vibrant place than television is. Television is passive.”

The vast majority of television households in the United States won’t receive the station. And with a paycheck of $250 for first time submissions that air on Current, the citizen journalists will quickly learn that this fantastic new development is no way to get rich. Rosenblum says he’s a stockholder and believes Current is the model for the future, but he added, “I don’t know how many people are actually going to make the effort to see them.”

Ling, whose short career has included work with ABC, NBC and PBS, said she does feel the pressure of being a pioneer.

“The thing is, we’re doing something new and different, so we don’t know how the audience will respond,” she said. “We can only be grateful to have the opportunity to try.”

Rinehart, who worked on feature films as a lighting technician before making a go on his own, is even more thankful. “Current is the first organization or entity that receives things like this so openly,” he said. “I say this sincerely without being their poster child: I never thought I would get this much mileage out of a five minute short.”
